The development of the game dates back to early 2018, driven by the collaborative efforts of Trung Thanh Nguyen, and Aleksander Leonard Larsen, who later co-founded the gaming studio Sky Mavis following year. In February 2018, a sale of Axies was conducted, resulting in the adoption of 3,112 creatures in exchange for Ethereum, marking the initial steps in bringing the game to life. To expedite the development of Axie Infinity, Sky Mavis secured $1.5 million in funding in November 2019.
AXS and SLP were initially built on Ethereum blockchain (ERC-20), while Axies as ERC-721 token. Subsequently, Sky Mavis introduced Ronin, a permissioned Ethereum-compatible sidechain designed specifically for hosting the game. The transition of Axie Infinity to Ronin commenced in April 2021.
